Want to understand the score in depth?
The scoring explainer covers WingScore weights, the Bayesian aggregate, and why the number means what it means.
How scoring works- What is a check-in?
- A check-in is one basket scored. You rate five criteria (sauce, crispiness, meat, blue cheese, celery), add a Hot Take, and optionally log the sauce name, style, heat, and notes. Every check-in contributes to the restaurant's aggregate WingScore.
- What is the WingScore?
- WingScore is a weighted composite of your five criteria scores. Sauce and crispiness each count for 29%, meat for 22%, and blue cheese and celery each count for 10%. If you mark blue cheese or celery N/A, those weights are redistributed proportionally across the remaining criteria.
- Why does a 9.5 with 2 ratings rank below an 8.8 with 40?
- CAFO uses a Bayesian average to combine a restaurant's raw score with a global baseline (7.2). A spot with 2 ratings and a 9.5 average could be a fluke — one friend hyping the place. A spot with 40 ratings and an 8.8 average is proven. As a restaurant accumulates more ratings, its score drifts further from the baseline and closer to its true average. This is the same approach Wikipedia, Letterboxd, and board-game databases use.
- How do I add a place?
- When you tap Rate Wings and search for a spot, if it's not already in CAFO you'll get an option to add it. Type the name, and the form will geocode it against Mapbox to set the pin. The place is added to the database the moment you submit your rating.
- How do I fix a wrong pin or bad info?
- On any restaurant page, tap the Report Problem section in the sidebar. Choose the issue type (wrong pin, duplicate, closed, bad info) and add any context. The founding team reviews all reports in Supabase Studio.
- Can I edit or delete a check-in?
- Yes. From your profile, each check-in has an Edit button that pre-fills the rating flow with your existing scores, and a Delete button that removes it entirely. Deletion permanently removes the check-in from your history and adjusts the restaurant's WingScore.
- Are profiles public?
- Yes, by design. CAFO is a shared field guide, so ratings from real people accumulate into trustworthy aggregate scores. Your username, check-in history, and scores are visible to anyone. You can delete your account at any time; your ratings stay as anonymized data points so restaurant scores don't collapse.
- What's the home city for?
- Your home city filters the leaderboard on the home screen to your local area. It doesn't restrict what you can rate — you can log wings anywhere.
- Can I change my username?
- Yes, from Settings → Profile. Usernames must be lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores, 3–20 characters, and can't be reserved app names. Changing your username updates your profile URL immediately.
- How do I delete my account?
- Settings → Danger Zone. Type your username to confirm. Your profile is removed. Your check-ins stay in the database as anonymous ratings so the restaurant scores they contributed to remain accurate.
